The Merrywell, which is located at Southbank attached to Crown casino, is one of only a few places I’d actually eat a burger in the CBD of Melbourne. Similar to the Parlour Burger in Sydney which was attached to The Morrison, Merrywell has two different venues with different vibes. “Upstairs” is a bit classier with more extensive menu, while “Downstairs” is a more casual bar that serves up burgers, sandwiches, and drinks!
Very open and offering great views of the Yarra River, the downstairs bar at The Merrywell is a really chill and casual place to grab a bite to eat or a drink. Order and pay upfront at the cashier and then sit back and enjoy the views of the river.
Great for grabbing a drink after work and maybe participating in their happy hour! Grab a burger and a pint for just $15, which is basically getting the beer for free since most of the burgers are priced at $15 or more.
The downstairs menu is really casual; it’s basically just a list of burgers and a couple of sandwiches…my dream! This kind of diner vibe makes it really casual and fun to hang out it. With all kinds of shakes, snacks, and sandwiches it definitely reminded me of home.
We hit up the happy hour menu which got you the K.I.S.S. Burger and a pint of Cooper’s Ale or soft drink for $15! It was a pretty good deal, though I was disappointed that they didn’t make the burger selection clear until you went up to order. The K.I.S.S. Burger is your classic American cheeseburger with beef patty, ketchup (doesn’t even say tomato sauce on this menu!), mustard, onions, pickles, mayo and cheddar cheese. It’s a classic burger with classic flavors, and always cooked medium.
The Merrywell was actually the first burger that we tried in Melbourne, about a week after we moved, but we forgot to take pictures, and so we wanted to go back and document our adventure. So we went back because we knew that the burgers were good and we had to tell people! The only downside to this burger was the bun, it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as squishy and soft as I like and it also was a bit to much bun. The flavors of the burger, though, were so good and it was definitely “pink and juicy,” as they advertised. I don’t think the happy hour deal is really worth it considering it’s limited to just the K.I.S.S. burger or the MW Club sandwich, but I’d definitely go back just to have the other burgers. The first time we went we ordered the Red Eye Spicy and Dan said that was the spiciest thing he’s ever eaten…I’ve had spicier 😉
